Liver Spots & HyperpigmentationHyperpigmentation is a condition in which the skin darkens as a result of the overproduction of melanin which causes it to darken. Hyperpigmentation comes in many forms and can be caused by many things. One of the most common forms of hyperpigmentation is liver spots also known as age spots or senile lentigines. The spots look very similar to freckles but can be much bigger. It is rare for this condition to be seen in young people as it usually affects people from the age of 55 and above. It is a harmless condition of which the main cause is age. This condition can mainly be seen on the face and the back of the hands. Liver spots are not serious and only affect those who value appearances. As much as they are called liver spots, they do not arise as a result of a liver disease. There is no connection whatsoever. This condition is more likely to be found in people with light skin than those with dark. This condition can be seen in areas which are constantly exposed to the sunlight like the hands, arms and face. Some documented cases have shown liver spots to sometimes also occur in areas which are not exposed to the sun. These spots are characterized by being flat and sometimes oval in appearance. The spots are not complete circles and do not have defined edges. Their boundaries seem to be irregular. They can range from the size of an eighth of an inch to a full inch in diameter. Contrary to belief these spots don’t respond to over exposure to sunlight. Their color cannot be darkened no matter what amount of sunlight is exposed to them. These spots are not cancerous but every change in their appearance should be reported to the doctor be it a change in size, color or shape. This is a condition which is natural and most people can expect to suffer from it as they age, however there are people who are very conscious about how they look such that the thought of them having spots anywhere on their body is enough cause to worry. There are creams and cosmetics that serve the purpose of lightening the skin pigments thus reducing the appearance of these spots. If you intend on purchasing any of these cosmetics be aware of the ingredients listed and make sure they are safe. If it is possible look for ones that have natural ingredients.
